Mind Over Matter (Black Belt Living Challenge 0.5)
You’ve heard the phrase, Mind over matter. I have always thought of it from the perspective that the mind could overcome a situation or challenge. Webster’s Online Dictionary has several definitions for the word “matter.”
1 a : a subject under consideration
b : a subject of disagreement or litigation
c plural : the events or circumstances of a particular situation
d : the subject or substance of a discourse or writing
e : something of an indicated kind or having to do with an indicated field or situation
With “enough” mental toughness you (I) could get through or overcome any situation. Mustering the appropriate grit anyone could get through any hardship or challenge. And if you (I) didn’t overcome the situation it was simply because sufficient “intestinal fortitude” wasn’t mustered – try harder next time.
When I attended military school in college, we used to say, “It’s mind over matter. I don’t mind, and you don’t matter.” (We were young, thought it sounded clever and physical hazing wasn’t allowed.)
What I’ve learned recently from many of today’s greatest philosophers is that the mind is so powerful that thoughts can manifest – “Thoughts are things.” This philosophy incorporates another meaning:
2 a : the substance of which a physical object is composed
Quantum physicists talk about the mind’s ability to shape the outcome of experiments. Philosophers talk of the power of manifestation – the mind’s ability to create substance – more on that another time.
What I’ve experienced is that “Mind over matter” also pertains to the mind’s power over the body. If you’ve seen the video from my first physical challenge of 2010, you’ve seen me do 33 push-ups. Good old fashioned, Army regulation push-ups. I started with the goal of doing 30 and knocked out 33. This after an hour and 45 minutes of intense workout, including over 100 push-ups in class. Push-ups were never my strong point in the Army. Pretty good, eh? Ya, and here’s where the mind comes in: when I was at push-up number 32, with my friends cheering me on I thought, “I’ve got the strength to do 35.” AND IMMEDIATELY, “I don’t think I ever did 35 in the Army, I can’t be stronger than I was then.” I got one more push-up out of those still-strong arms – and then collapsed. Mind over matter.
I’ll go you one better. What I didn’t post was the video of my first attempt an hour prior, after only 45 minutes and before an hour of blackbelt training. I was knocking them out and feeling strong; while I was thinking of a disagreement I’d had that week. I was imagining what that person would think of me if they saw the video. “Maybe they’ll wonder why I don’t work as hard at other things as I do working out.” “Maybe they’ll think I’m a showoff.” And that’s about all it took to only do 19 push-ups. MIND OVER MATTER.
So let me ask you, “What’s YOUR mind doing to your MATTER?”

Must See – Christy Atlas’ Social Media Tip
In this post Christy Altas shares a unique tip I’d never heard in ANY training regarding social media. I met Christy this week at the BNI Leadership Training. Christy stays abreast of social media’s uses for marketing your business – so you don’t have to! As Gary Vaynerchuk (look him up if you don’t know how he’s CRUSHING IT) says: Social Media = Business. Living Deliberately with Greg Pinneo
I had the pleasure of spending the weekend with my good friend and mentor, Greg Pinneo, from Seattle. Greg’s a very successful real estate entrepreneur and leader of some great educational programs. He was down in Tampa hosting a 2 day event. I’ve been working with Greg for a number of years, and he has guided me to new levels of personal and business success. I had the opportunity to get some thoughts from him after wrapping up his event today. You can find out more about Greg and team at www.reachreturns.com.
It’s called “Crush It!” Crush what?
I recently spent some time with Gary Vanderchuk, a successful entrepreneur who’s just published a new book, called “Crush It!” It’s a great how-to on marketing the best brand you’ve got – YOURSELF! It was one of the reasons I started this blog. So if you think Twitter’s stupid like I did, check out this book. I think you’ll find it valuable. Full disclosure – clicking on the link and scoring this book means Amazon might pay me enough to buy a packet of zucchini seeds to plant in my garden!
Enjoy and talk soon…
Mister Keith L. Brown Keeping it R-E-A-L
Keith L Brown spoke to students at Tarpon Springs High today and blew their socks off! Chin up! Pants up! Grades up! Don’t be deceived by what you see in the movies – that’s r-e-e-l. We’re talking about r-e-a-l life here.
Perceptions & the new car
Truthfully, I never really considered how people would look at me based on the car I drive. I suppose it stands to reason, like what you wear.
Well let me tell you, people do treat you differently when you pull up in a Mercedes. I had no idea. Case in point – I’ve been buying supplies from this company for maybe three years. I pull up in the new car recently and for the very first time the manager carried my purchases out to the car! I had to chuckle! I get tons of compliments on the car…and it’s not high end either. It’s fascinating how our belief systems influence our thoughts. Wow, Mercedes – she must be doing really well, a highly sought after coach, very successful. Well true, but that doesn’t have anything to do with what I drive.
Those thoughts happen in an instant, at first glance, courtesy of our subconscious mind. We all do it, and we do it automatically, based on our belief systems. Tony Robbins calls them our BS. “It’s just your BS.” Then he looks around the room and people are like, say what? That’s a little rude, isn’t it? And he smiles and says, Belief Systems.” LOL! They can serve us or hold us back in our quest for success and happiness.
See you
My friend wants to shre her wisdom and love with the world. If you were in the same room with her she’d give you a big ol’ hug and some sage advise. Since she can’t come to everyone’s house, like Santa can, she’s leaving you a hug and advice on her webpage – so you can get a hug whenever you need.

My name’s Ruth and I’m a coaching ROCK-STAR! You can’t see me through all that smoke, but that’s me up there on stage! Well OK, maybe I got a little carried away...I CAN tell you I am a professional life and business coach who is so grateful to have found my passion years ago - changing people's lives. So I decided to get with the 21st century and (ask my husband to) put together this site to offer some thoughts into living a life you love. Thanks for visiting!
